One of the exhibits was a series of works created by the 15 members of a group I belong to called Fifteen by Fifteen. Fifteen by Fifteen is a group of like-minded textile artists from various places throughout the world, who have come together to participate in an art quilt challenge. Our artistic styles vary, but we share a love of art quilting, the desire to learn and experiment, and most importantly share and grow. Below are images from the exhibit.

The Jerusalem Post weekend supplement, In Jerusalem, featured an article on 20 September 2017, “Quilting Puts Israel on the Map.” The article discusses the Israel Quilters Association and also quotes Elsy Menko, the chairwoman of the organization of quilters in Israel. In addition the article discusses the current exhibit, “Home,” which is showing for a few more days at the Jerusalem Theater. A portion of the article is devoted to interviewing me as well and a photo showing my 2nd place winning quilt is included in the article. “Put up Your Feet and Take It Easy,” is a quilt showing my family members lounging in our living room together. Family is the epitome of Home for me! I find feet to be particularly expressive and this is the second quilt I have done involving feet that won a prize. The first quilt, called Sole Mates, is a quilt of my daughter and son-in-law as they stood together at a family gathering. Sole Mates is showing early November at the International Quilt Association 2017 exhibit, “Hands All Around” in Houston. The article is also available online if you have a subscription to the Jerusalem Post daily e-paper.

The 2011 summer quilters event occurred in Jerusalem last week. Quilters from the Israel Quilters Organization (www.israeli-quilt.com) gathered to learn and share ideas during a three-day get away held in Beit v’Gan, Israel. The events were well attended and included two days of inspiring workshops. I attended a class led by Carmela Zak (http://www.thimblecollectors.com/reg_-_intl_groups.htm), which included singeing synthetic fabrics with a solder iron. The textures created by the layers of singed fabrics resulted in a very unusual effect. The second half of the class was devoted to embroidery. Carmella took us through the world of embroidery and showed us a number of stitches that we will be able to use on these projects and any future quilts. In addition, other workshops offered during the get-away included Crazy Quilting, Collage, Baltimore Design, and more. The evening events were punctuated by a concert of two harpists and a flutist. The head of the Israel Quilters Organization, Clara Kichel (www.clarakichel.co.il), together with the other members of the committee who arranged the events, did an amazing job. It was a great experience.

Each quilt had to be 1.3 m x .9m (51″ x 35″) and had to touch on some aspect of kibbutz life. The quilts were judged and there were several winners. Although not all the submissions were shown, 56 quilts were shown for the month of May at Beit Gavriel, a lovely hall on the south shore of the Kinneret. I submitted a quilt for this exhibit and my work was exhibited. I based the quilt on a view of the fields of Kibbutz Shluhot, showing Mt. Gilboa in the background in Emek Beit Shean. I think the view from Kibbutz Shluhot is beautiful and it reminded me of almost 30 years ago when I volunteered on the carrot factory on Kibbutz Shluhot and lived on Kibbutz Maaleh Gilboa. I tried to convey the quiet and serenity of the scene in my quilt. The quilt has a three-dimensional quality, that makes you feel you are entering the scene.

Today I hosted our local professional networking group. It was my turn to put myself on stage and explain: What I do, Why I love it, and What is special about my product. I must admit I was quite nervous before everyone showed up. The table was set for 16; samples of my work were strewn across the table and the refreshments were set out. I thought I would practice my pitch, but I couldn’t sit still long enough to look at it again. It was all prepared on color coded index cards. Well, color speaks to me and I use it to convey my message in my work, so there was no surprise there. I kept remembering additional things that needed to be set and then all of a sudden everyone arrived. We started the morning with a short breathing / relaxation exercise led by one of our members. By the time she had led us through the exercise, I could breath and I could think. (Thanks Rachel!) So, now I was up. I looked at the group and I looked at my cards and I began to speak. All of a sudden I was in “class” mode. This […]

(Thanks Rachel!)

So, now I was up. I looked at the group and I looked at my cards and I began to speak. All of a sudden I was in “class” mode. This wasn’t really so different than teaching a class about something I love to do. I introduced myself and explained the techniques of quilting, talking about the three parts that make up a quilt: top, batting and back. I used my work on the walls and on the table to explain my message. I base my art on beautiful scenes I photograph around Israel. I showed the group some of the photos and the resulting quilts. They were really impressed.

I talked about my background. I started quilting 16 years ago as a hobby. After leaving hi-tech 1-1/2 years ago I decided to follow my passion and make quilting a career.
I showed my first quilt that took 10 years to complete. I quilted it by hand. That was the first and last quilt that I will do by hand…
I am a member of the Israel Quilter’s Association and I currently have a quilt exhibited in Israel for the month of May, which is a really important accomplishment for me.

I have added a line of useful art to what I create. I explained that simple bags and head scarves appeal to people who want something pretty and are not able to purchase expensive art at this time.

I have also begun to build Etsy shops for other local artists. Since my background is a mixture of art and hi-tech skills, I hope to be able to help other artists become more successful online.

I expressed my dream to become a recognized, successful quilt artist. Maybe one day I can employ people to sew for CindyRQuilts and they too will earn a living working with beautiful fabrics on creative designs. One should always have dreams…

After I closed there was a discussion around the table and everyone expressed her impressions and suggestions. This was an invaluable part of the process. I learned a lot and understood that overall everyone really liked my work. It was a huge boost! This was affirmation from a group who can also be critical if indicated. I thank you, one and all!

This time the blocks come from all over the world, including Canada, Australia, Israel and many parts of the US. The pattern is log cabin and the color range is blues, greens and purples. All the posts appear in the Quiltsy Blog.I took a photo of my block on a windy day while standing in front of the ancient wall at Tel Tzora, Israel, famous for Samson and Delilah, which is just a few minutes from our house. Wikipedia writes: “Samson is believed to have been buried in Tel Tzora in Israel overlooking the Sorek valley. There reside two large gravestones of Samson and his father Manoah. Nearby stands Manoah’s altar (Judges 13:19-24). It is located between the cities of Tzorah and Eshtaol.”

I feel like I haven’t written in a long time. I’ve been really busy stocking my Etsy shop with all my wonderful quilted projects. You can visit my shop if you want to see what I am offering. http://www.etsy.com/shop/cindyrquilts I also found a great Textile and Fiber Art forum called TAFA. Rachel Biel is in charge of the entire operation and she is great. It’s an online list for networking among fiber artists. I am really happy to be an invited member of TAFA. Visit my new profile: http://www.tafalist.com/2010/12/cindyrquilts.html If you want to become part of TAFA, let me know and I’ll introduce you to Rachel. More show and tell to come. Have a good weekend!
