“Opposites” quilt exhibit, Jerusalem theater. I called it Sole Mates. She sat on his lap. She was elegant and careful about her outward show. He wore baggy pants and scoffed up shoes. They were opposites in their appearance but they were attracted to each other because opposites attract. They were soul mates and also “sole mates”! The exhibit will run through 10 October 2015. Here are some photos. Here are some photos.

Last year at the summer workshops of the Israel Quilter’s Association I started a piece based on my photo at the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee). The workshop was taught by Maya Schonenberger. It was great! Maya is exceptional. Her work is exquisite and we all learned tons. I finally finished the piece this week. It’s a really interesting technique that brings out the true texture of all the fabrics. The depth created by this technique is amazing! Well, you can be the judge. Here are some photos. Dimensions: 22″ x 24″ / 56cm x 61cm

Color can evoke emotion in art. That is the theme of my latest work, “Tango Dancers”. Can you feel the extreme heat from the warm colors as well as the movement of the dancers? To evoke passion and excitement, I used many values from the warm range of the color wheel. I think the varying values helped add contrast and made the background pop. The focus of the piece is a pair of tango dancers in silhouette. I thread painted their musculature using warm colored thread. I layered another layer of batting behind the figures so they would also pop. If the quilt is accepted, it will travel around the US for the next year as part of a SAQA exhibit, so wish me luck! Dimensions: 38.25″ x 29″ Materials: Cotton fabric, cotton / polyester batting, interfacing, cotton thread

This Passover matzoh cover was inspired by a returning customer looking for a special addition to her Passover table. She asked me to make a cover presenting the dividing of the Red Sea. I played with blue fabrics to evoke water. I used cheesecloth and loads of thread paint to make the water frothy. I threw in some Angelina fibers for fun and sparkle. I hand sewed small figures of fabric who crossed the revealed water bed. I think it came out well. My Red Sea parted. The cover has 3 pockets for the 3 matzot. It is quilted and made of fine cotton fabrics and cotton flannel batting to give it a nice drape. Dimensions: 14″ x 15″ / 36 cm x 38 cm Hand washable only. Delicate. Available for purchase via my Etsy shop.

I am very excited to report my quilt, The fields of Kibbutz Shluhot, which I created in 2010 for the 100 Years of Kibbutz anniversary, has been selected to be part of the International Quilt festival in Beaujolais, outside Lyon, France, 18 – 21 April 2013. The French committee selected my quilt together with 29 other quilts from the Israel Quilters Association to be shown in this exhibit. You can see more about the exhibit by visiting their site: Quilt Expo at Beaujolais The quilt reveals a scene in northern Israel of Kibbutz Shluhot overlooking Mt Gilboa, which is very special to me because it reminds me of 30 years ago when I volunteered on this kibbutz. I tried to convey the quiet and serenity of the scene in my quilt. I created this quilted fabric art using raw-edge applique and many different cotton fabrics as well as “snippets” of fabrics and yarns. The date trees were hand sewn and the fence is made of yarn. I thread painted using all different threads to embellish the piece and finally I machine quilted the layers into a magical quilt that hangs on the wall. Dimensions: 130cm h x 90cm w / […]

As promised, I am back to talk more about the commissioned quilt for Neil Diamond and Kathryn. The center of the quilt contains two paths that converge in a diamond shaped photo of the couple together in marriage. Each path contains photos that relate to special events that touched on each of their lives separately and some photos as a couple. There are photos of Neil early in his life as a fencer and a performer. There are some current photos of Neil in concert. There are some photos of Kathryn in her younger days and some current shots of Kathryn riding a horse and taking photographs. Finally the bottom center of the quilt contains a well known quilt pattern called “Wedding Rings”. Within the rings are the words “Neil and Kathryn 2012” and “Our separate paths now merge to journey onward”. Here are some photos. Now that I have taken you through the journey of this wonderful project, here is a photo of the finished quilt. I hope you enjoyed my story. I wish Neil and Kathryn many years of happiness together!

I had a month to complete the quilt and ship it so it would arrive in time for the Diamond wedding. I felt the importance and relevance of this project all the way through the process. The concept behind the quilt was to portray their journey and it was truly a journey for me as well. I researched Kathryn’s roots and found photos of a castle in Ireland in the town from which her family came. The castle is in ruins today, but you can still envision its former glory. The area around the castle is of course a rich green — would you expect anything else in Ireland? I found loads of photos of the skyline of New York, but I decided to only loosely base the NY portion on the real architecture. I tried to approximate the Empire State building, the Chrysler building and the Citicorp building. I did a lot of hand sewing to depict the intricate detail of each building. As a former New Yorker, I worked on the NY skyline with much fondness. Below are photos of […]

Never underestimate the connections forged by using Facebook. One of my high school classmates and I were reconnected on Facebook during this year. We hadn’t been in touch in over 30 years! Anyway, she saw my quilt art and really liked it. Coincidentally, she was looking for a unique gift to bring as a wedding gift for her good friend, Neil Diamond,… the famous singer. My friend asked me to come up with a few sketches. I thought of nothing else. I filled a sketch pad. It was the greatest challenge. A project from the Stars! I sent a few options to my friend and she really liked one of the ideas. The concept was that each had taken their own paths and finally met. Neil Diamond is originally from NY and the roots of his bride are in a village in Ireland. I used these images in the quilt, together with the idea of that they were on a journey that converged in their union. The quilt was to measure 90 x 120cm. So, here is the sketch I began with. I’ll include more of the story and more pictures soon!

It’s done! Bound, sewn and delivered. I hope it’s a finalist. It was really fun to do. I tried to bring out the three-dimensional quality of the scene. I wanted you, the viewer, to understand that you and a cat are looking at a fridge with lots of stuff on the shelves. The closeup view shows the cat and her long white whiskers peering and sniffing at the contents of the fridge. I used cotton fabric, cotton thread, some synthetic fabric, some stabilizer and tulle. (The door is meant to be a little fuzzy because of the plastic shelving, which I made with tulle.) The batting is Warm and Natural, cotton batting. The final size is 8.5″ x 11″.
