Artist Statement:	“Chessmates” is a moment of connection and mastery as my son teaches my grandson chess, resulting in that magical ‘aha’ moment! This quilt captures their affection, their ease with each other and the nuance and complexity of the game. I hope my love for each of them and their connection to each other shows through in this work. This is a reminder to them of a moment in their growth together as they continue to play chess with each other.

Artist Statement:	This little girl loves to do grownup tasks. I captured her pouring flour into a bowl while her mom was preparing cookies. She said she was helping! Since her parents love to cook and bake, it must be in her genes!

Artist Statement:	A grandmother is lighting candles for the Sabbath. Hanging on the wall in the background is a charcoal portrait by her granddaughter, Tali Perlman Ohana. In the scene, the woman's late husband and the puppets are indeed "watching over" her. Memorializing the story of this photo was very important to the family. When the family was presented with the quilt, they were moved to tears. They said, "Cindy's quilt captured the essence of the subjects and particularly 'nailed' the glow of Dad's face!" --- Reference photo by Alissa Perlman

Artist Statement:	The only identical features about our twins are the shape of their eyes and the shape of their noses. That’s what their dad has always said about them, since they were born! This layered-collage portrait quilt reflects these amazing, independent women now that they are grown. They are nearly opposites with the exception of that twin bond, which will always make them Almost Identical.

Happy at 60

Artist Statement:	I celebrated the publication of our book, “It’s All About the Face” in my 60th year by making a self-portrait quilt I called Happy at 60! using the techniques in our book. I chose green facial tones to show that it is more important to be believable than realistic. I embrace with excitement and fascination the inspiring journey into the world of fabric portraits and invite everyone to bring faces alive by collaging fabric and thread in a harmonized composition.

Musical Scot

Artist Statement:	Music is usually associated with beauty. It calms the mind and even the soul. Scottish bagpipes are also considered music, but they are more cacophonous than beautiful. Yet the sound of a bagpipe brings the beauty of Scotland to mind, so who says bagpipes don’t convey music? While on a recent to trip to the Highlands of Scotland, we came upon this Scot playing his bagpipes in the street. He attracted quite a crowd. It was picturesque and memorable. I took his photo and share him with you here!

Kindred Spirits

She looks up to her "wise" older brother for help and protection. He looks to her for companionship and devotion. Together they share a special, unique bond.

Hard at Work

Artist Statement:	Quilting is the way I connect to my creative side. I love watching a new work come together. It amazes me each time. I am always aware of elements, such as light, shadow, value and bone structure. But the most important lesson is noticing the small nuances at the end of the process. A slight tilt of the head, a subtle smile on one side of the face, a dimple, a wink. The tweak could be a millimeter but that speaks miles. This layered collage portrait of my son-in-law, while he drilled into the wall is really quite commonplace. But there is a kind of tension in the work. How he is holding the drill and concentrating and the shadow he cast on the wall are all details I discovered by really focusing on the photo.
