Expo Patchwork & Quilt Exhibit, Mexico City: Fifteen by Fifteen

A special Expo Patchwork & Quilt Special Exhibit was held this past weekend at The World Trade Center in Mexico City. One of the exhibits was a series of works created by the 15 members of a group I belong to called Fifteen by Fifteen.

Fifteen by Fifteen is a group of like-minded textile artists from various places throughout the world, who have come together to participate in an art quilt challenge. Our artistic styles vary, but we share a love of art quilting, the desire to learn and experiment, and most importantly share and grow.

Below are images from the exhibit. One of the members, Genevieve Guadalupe is shown explaining about the artwork and about our group. I made the series of Cats, which are shown in detail on my website: Black and White Cat, Abstract Cat and Complementary Colors Cat.

Houston Quilt Festival: What a treat!

I had the pleasure to attend the International Quilt festival in Houston this year. If you have ever been to a quilt festival, you know it can be a very intense experience. Multiply that experience 100-fold and you will begin to understand what the Houston festival is like.

There are more than 60,000 attendees and so many friends to see. There are more than a thousand vendors. There are 1000s of beautiful quilts to view. Classes, lectures, training, tours and an amazing amount of shared information.

Here is a photo on preview night with my roommate and good friend, Phyllis. We had a blast viewing and critiquing the quilts.

Every time you turn a corner you see a quilt you missed the first time around. This is my second time at this festival. I attended four years ago and I found that it takes me three walk arounds to take in the breath and wealth of the show. Each time around I pick up different information and view the works in a different way.

I had two pieces in the Hands All Around exhibit. It was quite a charge seeing my art on the walls of the show! In addition, the festival used my piece, “Colors of the Jerusalem Market” to announce Hands All Around 2018.

Danny Amazonas had his own exhibit. Here is a photo of Danny standing in front of a mural size quilted fish tank. His entire exhibit was stunning.

I had the fortune to learn with some fantastic quilters. I took an interactive dye painting class with Hollis Chatelain. She painted a portrait in front of the class and then thread sketched part of the face while we watched.

I learned about surface design with Claudia Pfeil. Her message is PPP… Practice, practice, practice. We practiced on longarm machines provided by the festival. I learned tons. I know what I will be doing during my free time once I am back home…

I visited with Angela Walters, the long arm quilter from Craftsy. Angela quilts on a Handi Quilter Avante just like I do! We had a chat about Angela’s influence on our machine quilting techniques. Here’s a photo of Angela with me and a friend from home.

I visited the Handi Quilter booth and talked about rulers with Vicki Hoth. I learned about the newest Handi Quilter machine, “Amara” with Gail Berry and Nate Arnesen. What an elegant new machine. It has a 20” throatspace and some new features that I would call, “Quality of life”.

I bought some fabric. One can never have enough fabric, right? The booths were calling with such irresistible eye candy. I even found a great light for my sewing machine for those late nights when I can’t tear myself away from the machine. At least I will be able to see what I’m doing.

Now that the festival is over, I have an opportunity to think about what I saw, study my photos and let the sheer inspiration do its job. What a treat! My head is dealing with ideas. I wish I could capture them all to save for the future.

Jerusalem Post features quilting in Israel

The Jerusalem Post weekend supplement, In Jerusalem, featured an article on 20 September 2017, “Quilting Puts Israel on the Map.” The article discusses the Israel Quilters Association and also quotes Elsy Menko, the chairwoman of the organization of quilters in Israel. In addition the article discusses the current exhibit, “Home,” which is showing for a few more days at the Jerusalem Theater.

A portion of the article is devoted to interviewing me as well and a photo showing my 2nd place winning quilt is included in the article. “Put up Your Feet and Take It Easy,” is a quilt showing my family members lounging in our living room together. Family is the epitome of Home for me! I find feet to be particularly expressive and this is the second quilt I have done involving feet that won a prize. The first quilt, called Sole Mates, is a quilt of my daughter and son-in-law as they stood together at a family gathering. Sole Mates is showing early November at the International Quilt Association 2017 exhibit, “Hands All Around” in Houston.

Featured Article in Art Quilting Studio

Art Quilting Studio just released their Summer 2017 issue and I have a featured article in the current magazine. It’s so exciting to see my work in print and to share my techniques. My article contains photos of “Sole Mates” and “Discovery”. These two pieces have won prizes and have been exhibited internationally. “Sole Mates” will be showing in the International Quilt Festival in Houston in November 2017. “Discovery” is currently part of a SAQA exhibit in Europe.

I am really pleased with the article. It’s a high-level periodical that comes out twice a year. It is sold on news stands if anyone wants to get a copy. There are great articles and I am proud to have mine among them. More information about the issue is here:

Free motion quilting on the Handi Quilter Avante longarm

I want to share my latest accomplishment. This time I made a bed quilt for my kids on my Handi Quilter Avante longarm machine. It took me a little bit of time to make friends with my new machine. I will admit I was slightly intimidated even though I had been trained to use it by the trained staff at Handi Quilter in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was a change from my comfortable home machine — moving the machine rather than the fabric — and the speed was just incredible. However, it didn’t take long for me to see the merits of my new friend. I definitely found a new comfort zone.

I don’t typically spend a lot of my quilting time working on traditional quilts, but I promised a queen-size bed quilt to my kids when they got married, 6-1/2 years ago. After I installed the new machine, I thought it was finally time to fulfill this promise. As they say, “I put the pedal to the medal” and didn’t leave my room very much over the next two weeks. By the end of this time, I had free-motion quilted this massive piece. The difference between a longarm and a domestic machine is that you don’t have to fight with the quilt to push it through a small throat space. My shoulders didn’t hurt as I moved the machine over the layers. I found that the technique of free motion quilting is the same whether you are moving the fabric or the machine. Finally the speed of the machine and the fact that I didn’t have to baste the layers was an awesome time saver. I entered the “zone”… and didn’t notice the passage of time. It was really an enjoyable experience.

I am thrilled with the result and my kids are already using the quilt. They too seem very pleased. Here’s a photo of the new quilt.

Quilted Fiber Art Landscapes of Israel, Commissioned Series for a Spiral Staircase

This series of six quilts was made as a commission for someone who plans to hang the quilts along her spiral staircase.
It was the best commission ever! I took the photos and she chose the ones she liked best.
Each quilt is the same size, 12″ x 22″ and bordered with the same fabric. But that’s where the similarity ends!
They are all beautiful places in Israel — that’s why I enjoyed making them so much!

I won a prize!!! “Opposites” quilt exhibit, Jerusalem theater

“Opposites” quilt exhibit, Jerusalem theater. I called it Sole Mates.

She sat on his lap. She was elegant and careful about her outward show. He wore baggy pants and scoffed up shoes. They were opposites in their appearance but they were attracted to each other because opposites attract. They were soul mates and also “sole mates”!

The exhibit will run through 10 October 2015.

Wonderful exhibit of color opens at Beit Gavriel, Israel

My piece, Rainbows of the Jerusalem Market, is included in the wonderful exhibit, Color Palette, which opened on Friday, 8 May 2015. The exhibit, which will run for the month of May, is being shown at the gallery overlooking the Kineret in Beit Gavriel, Israel. The exquisite art is shown in lovely light across from a luscious view of the Sea of Galilee. The exhibit is run by the Israel Quilters Association .
