One of the exhibits was a series of works created by the 15 members of a group I belong to called Fifteen by Fifteen. Fifteen by Fifteen is a group of like-minded textile artists from various places throughout the world, who have come together to participate in an art quilt challenge. Our artistic styles vary, but we share a love of art quilting, the desire to learn and experiment, and most importantly share and grow. Below are images from the exhibit. Each time around I pick up different information and view the works in a different way. I had two pieces in the Hands All Around exhibit. It was quite a charge seeing my art on the walls of the show!
I learned about surface design with Claudia Pfeil. Her message is PPP… Practice, practice, practice. We practiced on longarm machines provided by the festival. I learned tons. I know what I will be doing during my free time once I am back home…

I visited with Angela Walters, the long arm quilter from Craftsy. Angela quilts on a Handi Quilter Avante just like I do! We had a chat about Angela’s influence on our machine quilting techniques. Here’s a photo of Angela with me and a friend from home.

Angela Walters with me and friend

I visited the Handi Quilter booth and talked about rulers with Vicki Hoth. I learned about the newest Handi Quilter machine, “Amara” with Gail Berry and Nate Arnesen. What an elegant new machine. It has a 20” throatspace and some new features that I would call, “Quality of life”.

I bought some fabric. One can never have enough fabric, right? The booths were calling with such irresistible eye candy. I even found a great light for my sewing machine for those late nights when I can’t tear myself away from the machine. At least I will be able to see what I’m doing.

Now that the festival is over, I have an opportunity to think about what I saw, study my photos and let the sheer inspiration do its job. What a treat! My head is dealing with ideas. I wish I could capture them all to save for the future.

My piece, Rainbows of the Jerusalem Market, is included in the wonderful exhibit, Color Palette, which opened on Friday, 8 May 2015. The exhibit, which will run for the month of May, is being shown at the gallery overlooking the Kineret in Beit Gavriel, Israel. The exquisite art is shown in lovely light across from a luscious view of the Sea of Galilee. The exhibit is run by the Israel Quilters Association . I finally decided to start taking drawing classes and they have really made a difference. I have learned a ton about perspective and rules of drawing. I drew a self portrait, which everyone agrees looks like someone or everyone in my family. I think it’s a great start! Naomi Ocean, my art teacher and Riki Metz my fellow art student are both incredibly supportive and share so much knowledge. Thanks you guys! I decided to prepare a piece for the Color Palette challenge for the Israel Quilter’s Association. The piece made the cut and is now hanging in the Jerusalem Theater through 15 June 2014. There is an exhibit opening on Thur, 15 May 2014 if you want to join us there. All are welcome. Below is the invitation and a photo of my quilt.
My vision of color is the rainbow formed by fruit at the Jerusalem market, Mahaneh Yehuda, which is a very unique place that challenges our senses. The colors, sounds, smells and flavor of the atmosphere tempt us and pull us into this addictive setting. I tried to evoke this feeling in my quilt.

Six of my quilts will be shown during July and August 2014 at the Chase Family Gallery at the JCC in Greater Hartford, CT. The theme is Connecting Threads with a Jewish Tone. If you can visit the exhibit, it looks like a lovely gallery. Let me know how it is. I wish I could make it, but at least my quilts will be well traveled!

I prepared loads of quilted accessories for the fair at our synagogue. I worked around the clock and have loads of stock now. So, keep that in mind if you need any handmade gifts this summer.

Color can evoke emotion in art. That is the theme of my latest work, “Tango Dancers”. Can you feel the extreme heat from the warm colors as well as the movement of the dancers? To evoke passion and excitement, I used many values from the warm range of the color wheel. I think the varying values helped add contrast and made the background pop. The focus of the piece is a pair of tango dancers in silhouette. I thread painted their musculature using warm colored thread. I layered another layer of batting behind the figures so they would also pop. If the quilt is accepted, it will travel around the US for the next year as part of a SAQA exhibit, so wish me luck! Dimensions: 38.25″ x 29″ Materials: Cotton fabric, cotton / polyester batting, interfacing, cotton thread

I am very excited to report my quilt, The fields of Kibbutz Shluhot, which I created in 2010 for the 100 Years of Kibbutz anniversary, has been selected to be part of the International Quilt festival in Beaujolais, outside Lyon, France, 18 – 21 April 2013. The French committee selected my quilt together with 29 other quilts from the Israel Quilters Association to be shown in this exhibit. You can see more about the exhibit by visiting their site: Quilt Expo at Beaujolais The quilt reveals a scene in northern Israel of Kibbutz Shluhot overlooking Mt Gilboa, which is very special to me because it reminds me of 30 years ago when I volunteered on this kibbutz. I tried to convey the quiet and serenity of the scene in my quilt. I created this quilted fabric art using raw-edge applique and many different cotton fabrics as well as “snippets” of fabrics and yarns. The date trees were hand sewn and the fence is made of yarn. I thread painted using all different threads to embellish the piece and finally I machine quilted the layers into a magical quilt that hangs on the wall. Dimensions: 130cm h x 90cm w / […]
