Finished art quilt wall hanging for Neil Diamond and his wife Kathryn

As promised, I am back to talk more about the commissioned quilt for Neil Diamond and Kathryn. The center of the quilt contains two paths that converge in a diamond shaped photo of the couple together in marriage. Each path contains photos that relate to special events that touched on each of their lives separately and some photos as a couple.
There are photos of Neil early in his life as a fencer and a performer. There are some current photos of Neil in concert. There are some photos of Kathryn in her younger days and some current shots of Kathryn riding a horse and taking photographs.
Finally the bottom center of the quilt contains a well known quilt pattern called “Wedding Rings”. Within the rings are the words “Neil and Kathryn 2012” and “Our separate paths now merge to journey onward”.

Now that I have taken you through the journey of this wonderful project, here is a photo of the finished quilt. I hope you enjoyed my story. I wish Neil and Kathryn many years of happiness together!

“Couples Theme” Art Exhibit at HaElla Gallery, Moshav Givat Yishayahu

The opening of a unique art exhibit featuring the theme “Couples” took place a week ago, Thursday night. The exhibit is housed in the art gallery on Moshav Givat Yishayahu, home to quite a few artists in the HaElla area.
The theme was presented in paint, photo, steel, chicken wire and wood. Attendees wandered around the art exhibit with a glass of wine and high spirit. One of the renowned artists featured was Moshe Katz, blacksmith. Katz has been exhibited widely internationally.

The art portion of the event was followed by a lively concert nearby. The HaElla Artists are a cooperative that run events such as this one several times a year. They also host visitors in their homes at open house weekends before Sukkot and Pesach.

“100 Years of Kibbutz” Quilt exhibit in Israel

The Israel Quilters Association recently held a quilt exhibit featuring the theme “100 Years of Kibbutz”. Each quilt had to be 1.3 m x .9m (51″ x 35″) and had to touch on some aspect of kibbutz life. The quilts were judged and there were several winners. Although not all the submissions were shown, 56 quilts were shown for the month of May at Beit Gavriel, a lovely hall on the south shore of the Kinneret.

Kibbutz Shluhot and Mt. Gilboa

I submitted a quilt for this exhibit and my work was exhibited. I based the quilt on a view of the fields of Kibbutz Shluhot, showing Mt. Gilboa in the background in Emek Beit Shean. I think the view from Kibbutz Shluhot is beautiful and it reminded me of almost 30 years ago when I volunteered on the carrot factory on Kibbutz Shluhot and lived on Kibbutz Maaleh Gilboa. I tried to convey the quiet and serenity of the scene in my quilt.The quilt has a three-dimensional quality, that makes you feel you are entering the scene.

A journalist visited the exhibit and did a short video about some of the quilts that were exhibited and won prizes. The video also discusses the Israel Quilters Association. It’s very nicely done.

It’s raining… passion fruit!

It’s finally raining in the Land. We have had three glorious days of stormy weather from north to south and the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) is finally getting a sip.

I went out to the garden and found the passion fruit vine had shed it’s fruit — almost as if it was raining fruit. I filled two baskets. That should be enough for awhile since I am the only one in our family who likes them. Anyone have some good recipes for them? I usually eat them straight up.

They might make a nice subject for a quilt. I’ll have to mull that one over.

Another landscape art quilt… Here Goes

My newest piece is based on a photo I took at the Ein Hemed National Park in Israel. The idea is to go from photo to fabric. Here is the photo:

I’m working on this project in the context of an online course I am taking from the Quilt University, called On Land and Sea by Susan Brittingham.

I’m up to the stage where I am choosing fabrics that will mirror this beautiful view. I especially like the window into the forest formed by the arch of the bridge. I’ll post some more photos as I progress in this new quilt art challenge.
