Decorative art wall hangings: Is that the right direction?

I have been thinking about what I do lately. Every now and then you are supposed to rethink your vision and mission statement to see if they are still on the mark. I always come back to the same thing. I want to make unique quilt art that adds to the beauty around us and I want the subject of my work to be the amazing landscape of Israel.

I drive to different spots and am in awe of the beauty around me here. Last week we drove to my son’s army base to pick up his stuff before his release. (He’s out now!!!) We drove through the Negev. The scenery was stark desert and it was spectacular. You could see green patches and lonely trees in the sand where there must be underground springs.

I listened to a lecture recently where the subject was about finding your voice. I am convinced that the nature scenes that surround us in the Holy Land are as spiritual and passionate as it comes. What better medium than to create textured art with vivid colors and depth and dimension? So after much thought and introspection I have come to the same conclusion. I should quilt one-of-a-kind fabric landscapes that evoke the strong emotion I feel for the land around me.

Here I go… On to my next piece with the help of my furry friend Oreo. I’ll let you know when it’s ready. I think I will make smaller wall hangings for awhile and see if they are more accessible.

“Couples Theme” Art Exhibit at HaElla Gallery, Moshav Givat Yishayahu

The opening of a unique art exhibit featuring the theme “Couples” took place a week ago, Thursday night. The exhibit is housed in the art gallery on Moshav Givat Yishayahu, home to quite a few artists in the HaElla area.
The theme was presented in paint, photo, steel, chicken wire and wood. Attendees wandered around the art exhibit with a glass of wine and high spirit. One of the renowned artists featured was Moshe Katz, blacksmith. Katz has been exhibited widely internationally.

The art portion of the event was followed by a lively concert nearby. The HaElla Artists are a cooperative that run events such as this one several times a year. They also host visitors in their homes at open house weekends before Sukkot and Pesach.

Etsy Quiltsy team: Traveling quilt blocks

The Quiltsy Team on Etsy has organized a round robin quilt. This time the blocks come from all over the world, including Canada, Australia, Israel and many parts of the US. The pattern is log cabin and the color range is blues, greens and purples. Each time someone posts a block, she sends a photo with the block within a scene indigenous to her home. All the posts appear in the Quiltsy Blog.I took a photo of my block on a windy day while standing in front of the ancient wall at Tel Tzora, Israel, famous for Samson and Delilah, which is just a few minutes from our house.
Wikipedia writes: “Samson is believed to have been buried in Tel Tzora in Israel overlooking the Sorek valley. There reside two large gravestones of Samson and his father Manoah. Nearby stands Manoah’s altar (Judges 13:19-24). It is located between the cities of Tzorah and Eshtaol.”

Why is quilting important to me?

Being surrounded by beauty raises people’s spirits and outlook. I am very conscious of the harmony I create through color and choice of fabric. My favorite subjects are scenes from Israel. I love taking my own photographs and recreating them in fabric. I paint with thread much like a painter uses inks and paint. If you can walk into one of my scenes, I’ve done a good job!
