This decaying garden chair seemed just right for this project. The chair was in a neglected alcove. It was broken and tilting to one side. The seat was disheveled and full of holes. There was something attractive about the scene. It must have been a big comfortable chair once upon a time. But now it is in ruin. I think the scene still has potential. If it was cleaned up and fixed it would be a wonderful place to sit and ruminate. Too bad it has been left to erode and decay.

The wall erected around the Second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem in 19 BCE was almost entirely destroyed with the exception of a small section on the western side, the Western Wall. This last remaining vestige is holy to the Jews because of its link to the sacred Temple Mount. The Wall majestically towers over the men and women who pray there day and night all year round. I tried to bring this feeling to life in my quilt.

Artist Statement:

This quilted, fabric art wall hanging shows how I see Jerusalem.
This landscape is a medley of nature mixed with old and new. It's like no other place in the world. The old walls overlooking the Judean Hills are spectacular. The modernity of the new bridge merged with the antiquity of the walls was my inspiration for this piece.

I created this quilt art using raw-edge applique and many different cotton fabrics as well as "snippets" of fabrics and yarns. I thread painted using all different threads to embellish the piece and finally I machine quilted the layers into a magical quilt that hangs on the wall.

This quilt toured at the Ailsa Craig Quilt Festival in Canada in 2013 and was exhibited at the Chase Family Gallery in Greater Hartford, CT in 2014.
